Compassionate Crisis Care, When It Matters Most

Mental health crises do not follow a schedule. Flowstate Crisis Services exists to ensure individuals across Iowa have access to expert psychiatric support every hour of every day.

Since launching in April 2022, our crisis program has grown thoughtfully through trust, collaboration, and proven outcomes, expanding from a small group of partners to a statewide network of hospitals and crisis stabilization centers.

Today, Flowstate provides 24/7/365 crisis services across 28 counties, partnering with 33 critical access hospitals and three distinct crisis stabilization centers, including an Access Center, a Child–Adolescent Crisis Stabilization Center, and an Adult Crisis Stabilization Center. Each partnership is designed around the unique needs of the community and the populations it serves.

Integrated, Community-Based Support

What sets Flowstate apart is our deep integration into the communities we serve. Our Iowa-based clinicians work side by side with emergency department staff and are often viewed as an extension of the hospital care team. By embedding directly within hospital workflows and electronic health records, we support safer decision-making, real-time collaboration, and continuity of care from initial evaluation through disposition.

Our services include comprehensive psychiatric crisis assessments, medication management, placement coordination, and consultation support for hospital staff. In July 2024, we expanded our crisis model to include extended Substance Use Disorder services, offering up to 16 hours per day of SUD support and full placement coordination for individuals experiencing substance-related crises.

Collaboration That Improves Outcomes

Flowstate Crisis Services is built on a culture of collaboration and communication. Structured pre- and post-huddles, shared decision-making, and open communication channels allow our teams to remain engaged throughout a patient’s stay. This approach supports faster response times, more appropriate placement decisions, and improved experiences for both patients and hospital partners.

Our growth has been driven almost entirely by reputation and word of mouth, reflecting sustained response times, efficient placement averages, and strong clinical outcomes even as our reach has expanded. We are grateful for the trust our partners place in us and for the relationships that make this work meaningful.

LOOKING AHEAD

As demand for crisis services continues to grow, Flowstate remains committed to thoughtful, sustainable expansion across Iowa. Our focus is on continuous learning, data-informed improvement, and collaboration with healthcare, judicial, and community partners to strengthen crisis response statewide. Above all, we remain dedicated to providing individualized, compassionate care for every person, regardless of insurance status or personal barriers.
